Mit dem Prozess der Ausdifferenzierung populärer Musik in verschiedene Genres der seit dem letzten Jahrhundert stattfindet, entstanden mit jedem neuen Sub-Genre auch eine dazugehörige Szene oder Subkultur, die sich unteranderem über die Musik identifizierte. Neben der Musik waren in erster Linie auch eine ähnliche Ideologie und eine räumliche Nähe der Protagonist*innen einer jeweiligen Szene ein ausschlaggebender Treiber in der Entwicklung. Mit dem digitalen Wandel der Medien und vor allem mit der gesellschaftlichen Etablierung des Internets und sozialer Medien hat sich ein großer Teil des kulturellen Lebens in den virtuellen Raum verlagert. Allem voran hat sich die zwischenmenschliche Kommunikation in den letzten 30 Jahren dadurch maßgeblich verändert. Über die Online-Verbreitung von Inhalten haben Trends oft globale Dynamiken. Personen, die in einer vormals nicht digitalisierten Welt aufgrund örtlicher Beschränkungen niemals miteinander in Kontakt kommen konnten, haben durch das Internet die Möglichkeit sich miteinander zu vernetzen. Gleichzeitig erlaubt der digitale Medienwandel einen zuvor nicht dagewesenen Zugang zu digitalen Musikinstrumenten und Produktionssoftware, der die Barriere zum Aufnehmen eigener Musik senkt. Dadurch können (Amateur-)Musiker*innen unabhängig von Musikverlagen und Trends Musik produzieren, verbreiten und über räumliche Barrieren hinweg mit Gleichgesinnten in Kontakt treten. Diese Dynamik des Medienwandels mit ihren Auswirkungen auf die Musikkultur begünstigte in den letzten 20 Jahren auch das Entstehen von neuen (digitalen) Subgenres und -kulturen über räumliche Grenzen hinweg. Der vorliegende Artikel beschäftigt sich am Beispiel von Emo und Cloud Rap mit neuen musikalischen Subkulturen, die sich entlang des digitalen Medienwandels entwickelten, und veranschaulicht so, wie die Prozesse der Entstehung und der Verbreitung von Subkulturen in einer digitalisierten Medienlandschaft zusammenfallen und sich gegenseitig beeinflussen können. Weiterhin wird die Frage aufgeworfen, inwieweit ‚digitale Subkulturen‘ von den Mustern ‚alter‘ Subkulturen abweichen. Diese Thematik ist ebenso für die Musiksoziologie wie auch für Medienwissenschaften von Relevanz. Zur Bearbeitung der Thematik wird zunächst der Subkultur-Begriff definiert und historisch eingeordnet, um sich auf eine dem Artikel dienliche Definition festzulegen. Anschließend werden die zwei Genres Emo und Cloud Rap erörtert, bei denen ihre digital-mediale Ebene eine maßgebliche Rolle in der Entwicklung und Verbreitung einnahm. Abschließend wird auf allgemeine Veränderungen in der Dynamik und Bedeutung von Subkulturen in einer digitalisierten Gesellschaft eingegangen.
Subkultur
Der Subkulturbegriff ist nicht einheitlich definiert. Häufig werden Subkulturen als Teilkulturen einer Gesellschaft verstanden. Die Einschätzung der Andersartigkeit einer Subkultur wird vom konsensuellen Standpunkt der dominanten Kultur getroffen. Der wissenschaftliche Entstehungszusammenhang des Begriffs hat zwei Perspektiven. Erstmals wurde der Begriff in der US-amerikanischen Soziologie verwendet und beschrieb Untergruppen nationaler Kultur, explizit ethnische Gruppierungen wie die afroamerikanische Bevölkerung oder migrantische Milieus. In der europäischen Soziologie hingegen wurde der Begriff zur Erklärung jugendlichen Verhaltens benutzt. Geht es um musikalische Subkulturen ist die letztere Definition dienlicher. Die Soziologie ging ursprünglich davon aus, dass Subkulturen über ihre Zugehörigkeit zu sozialen Gruppen (orientiert an Geschlecht, Alter, Ethnie, Schicht, …) genau lokalisierbar sind und mit jeweils korrespondierenden kulturellen Praktiken einhergehen. Neuere Subkulturen scheinen allerdings nicht mehr an den objektiven Merkmalen ihrer Mitglieder festzumachen zu sein. Sie haben eine größere soziale Durchlässigkeit. Dabei spielt die internationale massenmediale Vermittlung eine wesentliche Rolle, da sie die soziale Basis von Subkulturen verbreitert. Das kann so weit gehen, dass der Entstehungsprozess einer Subkultur mit dem massenmedialen Verbreitungsprozess zusammenfällt . Dies scheint besonders im Zuge der Digitalisierung und der globalen Vernetzung von Menschen über das Internet und die Sozialen Medien eine wichtige Rolle zu spielen. Wolfgang Lipp definiert Subkulturen als „Lebensformen, die Teil eines größeren kulturellen Ganzen sind, jedoch Normordnungen aufweisen, die von der Gesamtkultur abweichen“. Darüber hinaus arbeitete Gelder sechs vorherrschende kulturelle Logiken heraus, die Subkulturen im Allgemeinen charakterisieren: 1 . Subkulturen werden negativ ihrem Verhältnis zu Arbeit gegenüber bewertet. Häufig werden Subkulturen als hedonistisch, vergnügungssüchtig und selbstgefällig beschrieben. 2 . Subkulturen weichen von ihrem Klassenhintergrund ab. Häufig verleugnen Subkulturen ihre Klassenzugehörigkeit und sind sogar klassenübergreifend. 3 . Subkulturen haben keinen Grundbesitz. Orte werden von Subkulturen territorialisiert anstatt besessen. 4 . Subkulturen kommen außerhalb der häuslichen Sphäre, fern von Familie oder Eltern, zusammen. Dabei ist ein typisch subkulturelles Narrativ die anfängliche Abkehr vom Zuhause mit anschließender Anpassung an subkulturelle Formen von Zugehörigkeit außerhalb der Familie. 5 . Subkulturen werden mit Exzess und Übertreibung gleichgesetzt, da ihre Andersartigkeit über eine Reihe exzessiver Attribute in Gestalt von Verhalten, Stil, Kleidung, Slang/Sprache oder Konsum wahrgenommen wird. Dadurch werden ihre Angehörigen im Kontrast zur gemäßigten, ’normalen‘ Bevölkerung gesehen. 6 . Subkulturen stehen in Opposition zu den Banalitäten der Massenkultur. Die subkulturelle Identität wirkt gegen den Konformitätsdruck der Massengesellschaft und als strukturierte Verweigerung der Entfremdung als vorherrschendes Symptom dieser.
Emo & Myspace
„Emo“ stellt laut der Journalistin Hannah Ewens die erste musikalische Subkultur dar, die durch das Internet entstanden ist. Stereotypisch zeichnen sich Angehörige der Emo-Subkultur durch emotionale Aufgeladenheit, Sensibilität, Misanthropie, Introvertiertheit, Depressionen und selbstverletzendes Verhalten aus. Der schwarzlastige und androgyne Mode-Stil wurde häufig als Hybrid anderer bereits existierender Szenen angesehen. So bedienten sich Emos an subkulturellen Symbolen der zeitgenössischen Punk-, Skater-, und Goth-Szenen. Musikalisch entstand das Genre aus der Hardcore Punk-Szene, deren Sound Anfang der 2000er durch Bands wie Taking Back Sunday , My Chemical Romance oder Fall Out Boy mit melodischerer Pop-Musik vermischt und so massentauglich wurde. Neben dem musikalischen Hintergrund war Emo allerdings auch durch neue Technologie geprägt. Durch das Internet und MySpace als eines der ersten sozialen Netzwerke bekam die Emo-Szene einen für frühere Subkulturen nicht vorstellbaren Auftrieb in der Verbreitung und wurde gleichzeitig ein globales Ausdrucks- und Kommunikationsmedium. MySpace ermöglichte es erstmals, dass Musikfans mit Bands und Künstler*innen direkt interagieren konnten – ohne das eigene Zimmer zu verlassen. MySpace gab den Emos die Möglichkeit sich weltweit miteinander zu vernetzen. Sie konnten ihr Anderssein über dieses Medium öffentlich zur Schau stellen, wodurch ein „Zugehörigkeitsgefühl durchs Nicht-zugehören“ entstand. Die Online-Identität wurde so zu einem zentralen Merkmal der Szene-Mitglieder. MySpace erlaubte dabei diese Identität nach den eigenen Vorstellungen zu formen. Die eigene Seite konnte durch die Nutzer*innen individuell gestaltet werden und die eigene Lieblingsmusik enthalten. Auch die Erfindung von Aliasen für die Profilnamen waren ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Emo-Kultur. Ewens schlussfolgert, dass Emo durch das Wachstum des Internets überhaupt erst möglich gemacht wurde und argumentiert, dass Emo gleichzeitig die erste und letzte wirkliche Subkultur ist, die durch das Internet entstand. Durch das immer schnellere und besser vernetzte Internet seien Jugendkulturen heute sehr schnelllebig, schafften es nicht mehr in Ruhe zu wachsen und würden es daher nicht schaffen ins Offline-Leben überzuwechseln .
Cloud Rap & SoundCloud
Bezeichnend für die Medialität der musikalischen Subkultur der „Cloud Rap“-Szene ist bereits der Name, der sich von den Distributions- und Kommunikationswegen ableitet, über die sie sich entwickelt hat: Die ‚Cloud‘ verschiedener gratis Streaming-Portale wie SoundCloud oder YouTube . ‚Cloud Computing‘ beschreibt ein Modell, dass es erlaubt jederzeit und von überall über das Internet auf einen Pool von geteilten Ressourcen zugreifen zu können . Während es für die meisten Hip-Hop-Szenen üblich ist, dass diese eine stark im Regionalen verwurzelte Identität aufbauen und innerhalb des urbanen Nahraums Einflüsse austauschen und miteinander kollaborieren, entstand Cloud Rap über den virtuellen Austausch von Schlafzimmer-Produzent*innen über örtliche Grenzen hinweg . Die Nutzung digitaler Infrastrukturen ermöglichte den Protagonist*innen Zugang zum Musikmarkt, ohne Rücksicht auf die klassischen Gate-Keeper-Mechanismen in Gestalt von Musiklabels nehmen zu müssen. Musikalisch ist Cloud Rap schwer zu fassen, weil das Musikalische auch nicht im Zentrum des Genres steht. Vielmehr ist Cloud Rap der Ausdruck einer durchs Internet geprägten Do-It-Yourself Praxis und einer durch Musik und Videos transportierten Stimmung, die sich anfühlt wie „auf Wolken zu schweben“. Auch deshalb wurde das Genre als Cloud Rap betitelt .
Subkulturen im digitalen Zeitalter
Recherchiert man nach weiteren musikalischen Subkulturen, die durch den digitalen Medienwandel entstanden sind, oder gar nach digitalen musikalischen Subkulturen, stößt man schnell auf eine Vielzahl von Bezeichnungen und Mikro-Genres. Genannt seien hier unter anderem Health Goth , Vaporwave , Seapunk oder Witch House . Im Vergleich zu prä-digitalen Subkulturen scheinen diese allerdings kaum greifbar zu sein. Selten findet man mehr als eine Handvoll Artikel zu einer der genannten Szenen. Dabei bekommt man den Eindruck, dass man einem längst vergessenen Trend auf der Spur ist. Die Überlegung Ewens scheint hier nahezuliegen: Viele musikalische Subkulturen, die als kurzfristiger Trend im Internet entstehen, scheinen es nicht zu schaffen ihren Weg in die Offline-Welt zu ebnen. Ganz im Gegenteil: Sie scheinen auch nur online funktionieren zu können. Was alle diese Genres gemeinsam haben, ist dass sie jeweils aus einem spezifischen Meme entstanden sind, dass durch Wortneuschöpfung eine bestimmte musikalische Ästhetik beschreiben sollte. Ein Meme ist ein Bild, ein Video, ein Textstück o.ä., typischerweise von humorvoller Natur, das von Internetbenutzer*innen kopiert und schnell verbreitet wird . Wem der jeweilige neue musikalische Stil gefällt, kann ihn für sich selbst adaptieren und reproduzieren und so dazu gehören, ohne sich weiter mit anderen Protagonist*innen auseinandergesetzt zu haben. Während den wichtigen Subkulturen des letzten Jahrhunderts zumindest eine homogene Praxis oder Ideologie zu Grunde lag, scheinen viele neue digitale musikalische Subkulturen lediglich auf einer gemeinsamen Ästhetik zu fußen. Dabei hält sich das Innovationspotential der neuen musikalischen Mikro-Genres oft in Grenzen, es erfolgt Recycling und Adaption aus schon dagewesenen Ästhetiken und das Setzen in neue Kontexte. Wie man am Beispiel der Emo- und Cloud-Rap-Subkultur sehen kann, scheinen digitalen Medien die Entwicklung und Verbreitung von Subkulturen zu beflügeln und zu vereinfachen. Das Internet kann dabei helfen, Gleichgesinnte über räumliche Grenzen hinweg zu finden und so quasi dezentral digital existierende Subkulturen entstehen zu lassen. Gleichzeitig scheint Ewens mit ihrer These von Emo als der ersten und letzten im Internet entstandenen Subkultur recht zu haben. Emo scheint zumindest die erste und letzte im Internet entstandene Subkultur zu sein, die sich nach den Mustern alter Subkulturen in die Offline-Welt übertragen ließ. Neuere Subkulturen wie Cloud Rap scheinen Nischenthemen zu sein und bereits existierende Genres noch genauer zu konkretisieren. Sie sind somit vielmehr ein ästhetischer Ausdruck einer viel größeren Kulturentwicklung als eine tatsächlich eigenständige Community. Festzuhalten ist abschließend, dass sich viele bestehende musikalische Subkulturen durch den digitalen Medienwandel verändert haben und darum heute in Teilen nicht mehr nach den Mustern der großen Musikszenen des letzten Jahrhunderts funktionieren. Das Internet sorgt dabei sowohl für neue Dynamiken als auch eine noch nie dagewesene Schnelllebigkeit in Bezug auf Trends und für immer feinere Ausgliederungen von Subgenres.
